ROBERT INDIANA Pop purveyor of Love, Hope and American Darkness dies at 89. Robert Indiana’s iconic presentation of the word “LOVE” which he created in 1964, ranks as one of the most popular and well recognized artworks of the 20th century.

American Pop Artist Robert Indiana’s world famous image features the word L-O-V-E rendered in colorful capital letters, with the first two letters stacked on top of the other two, and the letter “O” tilted as if it were being swept off its feet. Since he designed the earliest versions, in the 1960s, the LOVE logo has acquired a life of its own.

A self proclaimed “American painter of signs,” Robert Indiana has created a highly original body of work that explores American identity, personal history and the power of abstraction and language, establishing an important legacy that resonates in the work of many contemporary artists who make the written word a central element of their oeuvre today.
