Biography for Damien Hirst

Born 1966

Damien Hirst has become a British art phenomenon since winning the Turner Prize in 1995.

Damien Hirst’s work as a sculptor, installation artist, painter and master print maker has both amazed and made him no stranger to controversy. Damien Hirst’s wide-ranging practise-installations, sculpture, painting and drawing-has sought to challenge the boundaries between art, science and popular culture. Damien Hirst’s energy and inventiveness, and his consistently visceral, visually arresting work, has made him a leading artist of his generation.

Damien Hirst explores the uncertainty at the core of human experience; love, life, death, loyalty and betrayal through unexpected and unconventional media. Best known for the ‘Natural History’ works, which present animals in vitrines suspended in formaldehyde such as the iconic ‘The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living’ (1991) and ‘Mother and Child Divided’ (1993), Damien Hirst’s works recast fundamental questions concerning the meaning of life and the fragility of biological existence. For Damien Hirst, the vitrine functions as both window and barrier, seducing the viewer into the work visually while providing a minimalist geometry to frame, contain and objectify his subject. In many of Damien Hirst’s sculptures of the 1990s, such as ‘The Acquired Inability to Escape'(1991) and ‘The Asthmatic Escaped’ (1992) a human presence was implied through the inclusion of relic-like objects: clothes, cigarettes, ashtrays, tables and chairs. That implied human presence became explicit in ‘Ways of Seeing’ (2000), a vitrine sculpture with a figure of a laboratory technician seated at a desk looking through a microscope. The more celebratory work ‘Hymn’ (2000), a polychrome bronze sculpture, reveals the anatomical musculature and internal organs of the human body on a monumental scale.

Damien Hirst is equally renowned for his paintings. These include his ‘Butterfly Paintings’, tableaux of actual butterflies suspended in paint, or in ‘Amazing Revelations’ (2003), for instance, Damien Hirst arranged thousands of butterfly wings in a mandala-like pattern. Damien Hirst’s Butterfly prints also include butterflies encrusted on hearts. The butterflies, captured on the plane of rich gloss paint – like luminous fly-paper – are among Damien Hirst’s most famous motifs, emblematic as they are of the fleetingness of life, and the romance of death. Blending the optimistic sentiments of the Beatles with Damien Hirst’s own delicate musings on mortality, the print finds the butterflies seemingly suspended in celebration, the vibrancy of their wings never diminishing, not even in death. Damien Hirst, print, signed ‘All you need is Love, Love, Love’. Damien Hirst, print, signed ‘All you need is Love, Love, Love’, diamond dust. And five butterflies on a cream back ground; Damien Hirst, print, signed ‘All you need is Love’.

In a series of Single Butterflies, Damien Hirst’s butterfly etchings are rendered in fine detail, appearing from their black backgrounds like encased species in the enthusiast’s collection. Having been depicted in art, embedded in resin and characterized in literature for many centuries, the butterfly has wide significance as a symbol of love, regeneration, fortune, freedom, spirituality and death, several of which are referenced in the etchings’ titles. Part of the heritage and visual identity of Hirst’s work since his early days, they are the newest additions to one of his most popular motif; Damien Hirst, print, signed ‘Emerge’. In 2009 The Wallace collection hosted an Exhibition of 25 new paintings by Damien Hirst. Damien Hirst had returned to the solitary practice of painting. Since the start of his career, Damien Hirst has challenged what it means to be an artist. ‘No Love Lost’ Blue Paintings bears witness to a bold new direction in his work: a series of paintings that, in the artist’s words are “deeply connected to the past.” The exhibition at the Wallace Collection, arguably the most intimate national museum in the world, was significant. In contrast to the white walls of a contemporary gallery, Damien Hirst opted to present these works in a classical environment, in the context of Old Master paintings in the great European tradition. Damien Hirst’s works engaged in a dramatic visual dialogue with the works of art displayed in the adjacent sumptuous rooms. In association with the exhibition a silk screen print was produced; Damien Hirst, print, signed ‘Skull with Ashtray and Lemon’.
